The Different Types of Eating Disorders and
Their Causes
There are several different types of
eating disorders in
society and all of them can cause serious health issues. In
fact, a person can die from an eating disorder. Many years ago,
a famous singer named Karen Carpenter did in fact die of
Anorexia Nervosa.
People who suffer from Anorexia believe that
they are too fat, even though they are extremely thin. It is a
dangerous psychological condition. Most of the people that suffer
from this condition are young women and teenage girls.
The
Anorexia eating disorder will cause serious health issues such as
heart conditions and cardiovascular problems. A complete breakdown
in the immune system is likely to happen as well. This is how a
person can die from this disorder. It is extremely
serious.
The main eating disorders are bulimia,
anorexia and binge eating.
Bulimia is similar to anorexia in that it is
a reaction to a supposed weight gain. The individual with this
disorder will binge eat quite often during the day and then follow
that with induced vomiting. Anorexia patients also combine binging
and purging in their condition.
In many cases, the sufferer has developed an
unhealthy opinion of their appearance. The media today focuses on
glamorized ideals of thinness. Everywhere you look; there are
pictures of models that are ridiculously thin. This is unnatural
and unfortunately, too many young women fall victim to their eating
disorders based on this desired image portrayed in the
media.
It leaves many young women with feelings of
low self-esteem and poor self worth. It can create an enormous
amount of social pressure on impressionable young
people.
Other factors that can lead to eating
disorders are genetics, personality disorders and biochemistry.
Most people suffering from anorexia all have the same personality
issues such as depression, the need for attention and inability to
cope.
People that suffer from eating disorders take
quite a long time to overcome these problems. Many just deny that
there is a problem at all. It can take years to get better. The
most important thing to do in order to overcome the problems is to
see treatment as soon as possible.
