Cause of Eating Disorder
Self-image is a
leading cause of eating disorder
particularly among young people. Constant social pressure from many
different media sources can cause people to feel self-conscious
about their body image.
Young people's
bodies change dramatically and with it come a tremendous amount of
pressure to fit in and be accepted for whom they are and what they
look like.
The
concern with ones self-image gets to the point of being obsessive;
this could cause an eating disorder. A condition such as this can
damage a persons vital functions and cause problems with their
daily lifestyle, whether it is school or a job. The important thing
to note is that it is very important that the individual seek
professional help as soon as these symptoms arise. This means that
they will likely need to be convinced to see someone by someone
that is close to them who notices the drastic changes in their
personal appearance and weight.
In the United
States alone, up to ten million teenagers develop some form of
eating disorder. The cause of the eating disorder is usually
associated with body image. Much of the time, these conditions
start around the age of eleven, twelve or thirteen. These eating
conditions are much more common among girls and women. More men
will experience issues with binge eating than conditions such as
anorexia or bulimia.
Another problem with
diagnosing these conditions is that teenagers tend to hide the
symptoms and cause of the eating disorder. One way to help prevent
your child develop a problem with eating is to nurture their
self-esteem and self worth. Help them feel comfortable about who
they are and help them learn to accept who they are. If the parents
have issues with their self-esteem and body image then the children
can notice that and develop the same conditions themselves.
Therefore, set a positive example as a parent.
